The brand's DNA
The brand's DNA
Oakley, an American brand born in the world of motocross, embodies technical innovation and radical design.
Known for its futuristic shapes and cutting-edge materials, it developed a distinctive visual language in the 1980s: wraparound temples, oval logos, X-shaped bridges, mirrored lenses with aggressive tints.
In eyewear, Oakley fuses optical performance with industrial aesthetics, with frames designed like equipment. Its vintage sunglasses reflect this hybrid vision, part extreme sports accessory, part experimental design object.
His story
His story
Founded in 1975 in California by James Jannard, Oakley started with motorcycle grips before moving on to motocross goggles and then glasses.
Oakley eyewear exploded in the 90s with frames produced internally in the United States, then partly subcontracted to Europe (notably Italy) after its acquisition by Luxottica in 2007.
The vintage period of interest extends mainly from 1984 to 2005, when Oakley designed models that have now become cult classics.
The iconic frames

Among the most sought-after models:
- Oakley X-Metal Romeo 1 (1997): cast titanium, floating bridge, avant-garde design.
- Oakley Mars: atypical round shape, hammered metal structure.
- Oakley Eye Jacket (1994): one of the first injected frames, made famous by athletes and musicians.
- Oakley Over The Top (2000): extreme design covering the skull, worn at the Sydney Olympics.
- Oakley Minute, Straight Jacket, Plate: Plutonite™ lenses, molded temples, distinctive elliptical logos.
The temples feature the elliptical Oakley logo engraved or embossed. Many models include internal references, the words “Made in USA” (until the Luxottica era), and sometimes patents indicated on the temples.

Did you know?
Oakley's X-Metal models are not molded like conventional glasses: they are made from a titanium alloy injected under vacuum at over 1300°C, a technology developed in-house and protected by several industrial patents.
