The brand's DNA
The brand's DNA
Since its founding in Florence in 1921, Gucci has embodied a certain idea of Italian luxury: a blend of formal elegance, symbols from the equestrian world, and a deliberate taste for ornamentation.
This identifiable style spans the ages: monograms, green-red-green web stripes, floral or animal motifs, jewelry and embroidery have marked its collections.
From the 90s, under Tom Ford, the image became more sensual and directive, without breaking with historical references.
In eyewear, this identity is expressed through structured, visually assertive frames, where each detail extends the aesthetic codes of the house.
His story
His story
Gucci was founded in 1921 in Florence. Since the 1970s, the house has developed licensed eyewear collections, primarily produced by Safilo (Italy) and then De Rigo Vision (Italy and Germany). These partnerships guarantee high-quality industrial manufacturing, with high standards in terms of finishing and assembly.
From 1994 onwards, Tom Ford's artistic direction gave Gucci accessories – including eyewear – a bolder, more sensual and assertive image, which was influential in the fashion of the 2000s.

- GG 2409/S: oversize butterfly frame in acetate, gold double G logo integrated into the temples.
- GG 1622/S: cat-eye silhouette, marbled acetate, fine metal inserts.
- GG 1825/S: thick square shape, wide temples with embossed Gucci logo.
- GG 1351/S: Optyl mask frame, typical of the 2000s.

The references are engraved inside the temples and follow the classic “GG [reference]/S” format for sunglasses. The country of manufacture is also indicated.
Did you know?
Did you know?
Gucci eyewear produced by Safilo from the 1980s onward sometimes used Optyl, a high-end plastic patented in 1969, renowned for its shape memory, lightness, and solvent resistance. This material, more expensive than acetate but also lighter, was often reserved for high-volume models.
Why collect them?
Why collect them?
- European manufacturing under license by Safilo or De Rigo, two leaders in the sector.
- Models identifiable by their references, often well documented.
- Noble materials (thick acetate, Optyl, gold metal) rarely used today in the same proportions.
- Relative but decreasing availability on the vintage market, especially for complete or good condition models.
