The brand's DNA

Carrera embodies the spirit of speed and performance in the world of eyewear. Founded around motor racing, the brand combines technical audacity with a bold aesthetic. Its style is recognizable by its dynamic lines, its wraparound frames designed for action, and a retro-futuristic look that defined the 1970s and 1990s. Always somewhere between sport and fashion, Carrera boasts a bold, urban energy.

His story

Carrera was founded in 1956 in Linz, Austria, by Wilhelm Anger. Inspired by the legendary "Carrera Panamericana" car race, the brand initially specialized in technical eyewear for skiers and motorcyclists. Starting in the 1970s, it diversified its offering with sunglasses and optical glasses for the general public, while maintaining its technical expertise.

In the 1980s, it innovated with the Optyl material: an ultra-light thermosetting resin, and collaborated with Porsche Design, giving birth to models that have become cult classics. Acquired by the Safilo group in 1996, Carrera remains today one of the emblems of vintage sports eyewear.

Did you know?

The Optyl material, used by Carrera since the 1970s, is not only 20% lighter than acetate, but also hypoallergenic and resistant to thermal deformation. This innovative material was patented by Wilhelm Anger himself, founder of Carrera and a pioneer of modern eyewear.

Why collect?

Vintage Carrera glasses represent a technical and stylistic milestone in the history of eyewear. Their appeal lies primarily in the early use of Optyl, a material patented by Wilhelm Anger. This innovation places Carrera among the pioneering brands in optical performance.

Models produced between the 1970s and 1990s are also sought after for their functional design, inherited from motorsport and motorcycling. Their ergonomics (wide bridges, enveloping shapes, stability) were designed for intensive use, making them well-designed technical objects today.

The collaboration with Porsche Design, initiated in 1979, has given rise to pieces that have become benchmarks on the vintage market, such as the 5621 and 5623 interchangeable lens models. These frames combine mechanical precision and formal minimalism, and are the subject of real monitoring on collector platforms.

Finally, manufacturing—primarily in Austria and Germany—guarantees a high level of finish and durability, with strict industrial standards. For collectors, Carrera thus offers a dual appeal: documented historical value and proven material quality.
