Detailed description

Crafted from Italian cellulose acetate, the golden tortoiseshell is complemented by laser-engraved geometric inlays, visible on the outer corners and along the temples. The inscription "Idee firmate made in Italy" on the inside of the left temple confirms the transalpine origin of each piece.

Mariella Burani, founded in the late 1980s in the province of Vicenza, quickly shifted its focus to eyewear with a decidedly feminine style. Model No. 5002 debuted in the early 1990s, at a time when Italian cinema's golden age was being rediscovered by vintage enthusiasts. Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn were among the first icons to popularize this shape, which was also adopted by Madonna and Sharon Stone during the retro silhouette revival of the early 2000s.

Crafted in Pieve di Cadore, the historic epicenter of Italian eyewear craftsmanship, these glasses are the result of a process combining a hydraulic press for cutting the acetate, manual surface polishing, and the insertion of gold leaf under a protective film. The metal hinges are mounted with precise tension adjustment, ensuring smooth opening and a stable hold.

FAQ

Vintage glasses?

What is it?

For us, vintage eyeglasses are more than 20 years old. This means they were made before 2005. You'll find original frames with us, dating from around 1910 to 2010.

Are they new?

Almost! In our collections, you'll find so-called "dead stock" eyeglass frames—which means they're vintage but still new—and others that have already had a life and have been worn.

ALL frames have been refurbished in our workshop near Lyon, cleaned, repolished, repaired, pampered, and more. And most importantly, the lenses are all new and selected for their quality, meeting the same standards as those you'll find at your optician.
