The brand's DNA
The brand's DNA
The Chagall brand stands out for its graphic and assertive approach to eyewear design. The frames are characterized by sometimes bold lines, material effects, and contrasting color combinations. The style navigates between stylized geometry, assertive volumes, and decorative details, without falling into pure eccentricity. The aesthetic recalls certain artistic movements of the 80s and 90s, with attention paid to the balance between form and visual identity. Chagall frames are often thick, made of acetate, with particular cutouts or inlays.
His story
His story
The Chagall brand appeared on the French eyewear market in the 1980s. It was distributed by independent manufacturers, often specializing in small-batch production or subcontracting for designer opticians. Made in France, these frames were primarily intended for the domestic market and certain European distribution networks. Chagall was not related to Marc Chagall, the painter, but used the name for stylistic purposes, as a means of artistic distinction. Little official documentation remains, but series found on the vintage market attest to regular production until the 2000s.

Some Chagall frames share molds or finishes with brands like Jérôme, Oxibis, or independent French manufacturers from the 1980s and 1990s. It was not uncommon for production workshops to produce under several distinct brands, which explains the formal similarities between some Chagall glasses and other French models from the same period, without these being copies or counterfeits.
Why collect them?
Why collect them?
Vintage Chagall sunglasses are of interest for their craftsmanship, their assertive style, and their roots in an era when French eyewear explored distinctive shapes without relying on major fashion houses. Less widely available than licensed brands, they offer a unique alternative for those who love eyewear with a strong and coherent design. Some frames, which are unobtainable today, reflect an aesthetic specific to independent French eyewear from the 1980s to the 2000s.
